DALLAS, Texas –A high school band has a standout member who is redefining expectations and inspiring others.
Ely Sosa, a junior at Little Elm High School, is blind yet plays an essential role in powering the sound of his school’s marching band.
Sosa’s unique ability to perceive music through senses beyond sight has made him an integral part of the ensemble, showcasing the potential to overcome traditional barriers.
Sosa shares a powerful message with those around him. He encourages others not to set limitations on themselves by saying, “Don’t put any barriers in front of you. [Don’t say], ‘I can’t do this or do that.'” This mindset has driven him to succeed and become a valued member of his school’s music program.
Sosa’s journey with music began at a young age. Despite losing his sight, his passion for music never waned.
Sosa learns music through auditory methods. He memorizes pieces by listening and uses his acute sense of hearing to stay in sync with the band.
At Little Elm High School, he found a supportive environment where his talents could flourish. The band director and fellow students have worked together to ensure Sosa can participate fully, adapting routines and providing the necessary resources for him to succeed.
