Allen B. West resigned as chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party on Wednesday in Dallas, confirming his departure in a text message without stating a reason.

West had led the party for more than two years after winning election as chairman on March 5, 2024, with more than 70 percent of the vote.

His resignation followed criticism over his decision to hold separate primary elections from Democrats, which removed the countywide voting option and required voters to cast ballots in their assigned precincts. Some voters reported confusion about polling locations and said they were unable to vote.

West later decided to rejoin Democrats in holding a joint primary for the May 26 runoff election. He said in a newsletter that members of his party criticized that decision.

West previously declined to step down despite the backlash. The party’s executive committee is scheduled to meet on April 20 and had the authority to consider his removal.

Tami Brown-Rodriguez will assume leadership of the party following West’s resignation. Party rules require the executive committee to hold an election within 30 days to select a new chair.
