Attorney General’s Office of Indonesia said authorities arrested Indonesia’s chief ombudsman Hery Susanto on Wednesday in Jakarta over bribery allegations, five days after his appointment by Prabowo Subianto.
Syarief Sulaeman Nahdi, director of investigations at the agency, said officials took Susanto into custody at his home following a search.
Investigators accused Susanto of accepting 1.5 billion rupiah (about $88,000) in bribes from a nickel company while serving in a previous role within the ombudsman’s office.
Authorities presented Susanto to the media wearing a detainee vest commonly used in corruption cases in Indonesia.
Susanto has not issued a public statement, and no legal representative has commented on the allegations. He faces possible imprisonment if convicted.
Indonesia holds the world’s largest nickel reserves and ranks as the leading global producer of the metal, which manufacturers use in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel.
