John McAllister, a Massachusetts-based artist, has been named the inaugural winner of the Dallas Art Prize, organizers announced, awarding him $20,000 and consideration for inclusion in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art.
The prize, established by the Dallas Art Fair, recognizes an artist whose work is shaping contemporary art. Founder John Sughrue said McAllister’s work reflects a lasting influence on the art world.
McAllister studied at the University of Texas at Austin and said he frequently visited Dallas museums as a student. He recalled traveling to view works at the Dallas Museum of Art, including paintings by Frederic Edwin Church.
Known for his landscape paintings, McAllister uses vivid and unconventional colors, often depicting natural scenes with purple lakes, yellow skies, and pink trees. He said his work focuses on capturing the emotional experience of being outdoors rather than replicating exact images.
McAllister said he spends significant time outdoors but does not rely on sketches or photographs, instead drawing from memory when creating his paintings.
The artist said the prize money will support his ongoing work by helping cover material costs. His paintings are currently on display at the James Fuentes Gallery booth during the Dallas Art Fair, which runs from April 17 to 19 in Dallas.
