LOS ANGELES — The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” ranked first at the North American box office with $26.1 million in ticket sales during its latest weekend, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The film regained the top position after spending two weeks behind “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” It also generated $703.9 million in global ticket sales, according to the studio.
Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “The Devil Wears Prada 2” placed second with $18 million in its third weekend in theaters. The film has earned $175.9 million domestically and $546.2 million worldwide.
The horror film “Obsession” debuted in third place with $16.1 million from 2,615 theaters. Focus Features released the film, which follows a young man whose romantic interest develops into a violent relationship.
“Mortal Kombat II” ranked fourth with $13.4 million in its second weekend, a 65% decline from its opening weekend. The film has earned $101.2 million globally.
“The Sheep Detectives” placed fifth with $9.3 million. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” followed in sixth place with $4.5 million. “Project Hail Mary” ranked seventh with $3.9 million. A 40th anniversary re-release of “Top Gun” placed eighth with $3.1 million. “In the Grey” ranked ninth with $3 million. “Is God Is” rounded out the top 10 with $2.2 million.
Amazon MGM Studios released three films in the top 10: “The Sheep Detectives,” “Project Hail Mary,” and “Is God Is.”
Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore said several films in the top 10 reflected continued audience interest in familiar titles.
The upcoming release of “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” is expected to enter theaters next weekend.
