SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama has signed a five-year, $252 million contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs, opting against a supermax deal that would have paid about $51 million more and giving the team additional salary cap flexibility for future roster moves.
The contract keeps Wembanyama with the Spurs through the next five seasons while leaving room for the franchise to build its roster under the NBA salary cap.
The decision follows a recent trend in which some NBA stars have accepted smaller contracts than the maximum available to provide their teams with greater financial flexibility.
According to The Athletic, rookie guard Dylan Harper is also expected to embrace a sixth-man role next season despite making a case to start. The report, citing people familiar with Harper’s thinking, said the team’s culture and long-term goals contributed to that approach.
De’Aaron Fox is expected to remain the Spurs’ starting point guard.
The Spurs reached the NBA Finals in 2026 before losing to the New York Knicks. The report noted that additional salary cap flexibility could help the Spurs retain players and pursue roster improvements in future seasons.
