SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State University plans an $18.75 million expansion of its Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center to increase capacity for active shooter response training, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The project calls for construction of a 31,300-square-foot facility at 1285 William Pettus Road, including a 16,480-square-foot warehouse and a two-story, 14,820-square-foot administrative building. Plans also include mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, as well as parking areas, driveways and loading docks. Construction could begin this month and last about one year, according to the filing.
The ALERRT Center, established in 2002 through a partnership between Texas State University, the San Marcos Police Department and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, provides training for law enforcement and first responders on responding to active shooter incidents and other threats.
The university said the expansion will support its Integrated Response Training Program, which uses scenario-based exercises to prepare officers and emergency personnel.
More than 350,000 local, state and tribal first responders have completed ALERRT training nationwide. The center incorporates research and lessons from past incidents to inform training methods and law enforcement practices.
Texas State University said existing facilities, which include multiple buildings, shooting ranges and training areas, no longer meet current demand. The university estimates total project costs could reach approximately $25 million.
Pete Blair said the expansion will improve the center’s ability to deliver training programs.
