MANILA, Philippines — June Mar Fajardo believes Gilas Pilipinas remains in good hands as he steps away from the national team, pointing to Kai Sotto’s return and strong performances during the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Fajardo made the remarks after the Philippines defeated Iran, 68-56, on Sunday night in what he described as his final game for Gilas.
“I told you guys that Kuya Kai will save us this window,” Fajardo said.
Sotto led the Philippines to an unbeaten fourth window despite the absence of naturalized player Justin Brownlee.
The 24-year-old center posted 18 points, 14 rebounds and a crucial block in the Philippines’ 82-81 overtime victory over Jordan on Friday. He followed that performance with 13 points, 16 rebounds and three assists against Iran.
The two games marked Sotto’s return to the national team since November 2024. He later suffered a torn left ACL while playing in Japan’s B.League.
Fajardo urged Sotto to stay healthy as he takes on a larger role with Gilas.
“Let’s just pray that he’s always healthy because he will bring us to glory,” Fajardo said.
The victory over Iran lifted the Philippines to 4-4 in Group E and strengthened its bid for a place in next year’s Fiba World Cup in Doha, Qatar.
Sotto said he wanted to give Fajardo a winning farewell after the veteran center’s 13-year national team career.
“I’m so lucky and blessed. When I was a kid, I looked up to him—he’s my idol,” Sotto said. “I’m so blessed to be part of his journey in the national team. I just really wanted to win these two games for Kuya June.”
Fajardo leaves Gilas after a decorated national team career, while Sotto’s return provides the Philippines with a healthy young center as the team continues its World Cup campaign.
