HOUSTON — The Houston Zoo is renovating its rhinoceros exhibit as part of a broader habitat upgrade project, with construction expected to be completed by November, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The $4.6 million project includes improvements to the existing rhino habitat and guest viewing areas, such as modifications to barriers, hardscape and drainage systems. The filing states the work will cover more than 215,000 square feet.
Zoo plans indicate the upgraded habitat will support animal welfare, safety and accessibility while expanding space for additional species, including zebras and another rhinoceros.
Renderings released by the zoo show added shade structures and closer viewing areas for visitors. Planned animal care features include heaters, fans, feeders and a water feature designed to support animal health and natural behaviors.
The project is part of a multi-year African habitat redevelopment launched in January 2026. The zoo also plans upgrades to the McGovern Giraffe Habitat and the Shani Market, with phased openings scheduled through 2026 and 2027.
The Houston Zoo did not respond to a request for comment before publication.
