HOUSTON, Texas– Tejano and Texas country music star Johnny Rodriguez died at the age of 73.

His daughter confirmed that he passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, following a period of illness during which he received hospice care.

Rodriguez rose to prominence in the 1970s with a string of chart-topping hits. Born in Sabinal, Texas, his musical career began after a chance encounter in jail, where his singing caught the attention of local law enforcement and eventually music industry professionals.

Known for blending Tejano influences with traditional country music, Rodriguez was credited with helping bring greater diversity to the genre. His work influenced a generation of musicians and contributed to the growing popularity of the country-Tejano crossover style.

Over his career, Rodriguez recorded multiple albums and achieved several No. 1 country singles. His contributions to music were recognized by fans and industry peers alike, and he remains a respected figure in both Tejano and country music circles.

Rodriguez is survived by his family, who have requested privacy as they grieve. Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced.
