HOUSTON, Texas — The Philippine Consulate General in Houston recently highlighted its engagement with Filipino analog astronaut Kristine Jane Atienza, describing her as a pioneering figure in space nutrition research and the first Filipino analog astronaut.
In a social media post dated May 15, 2026, Consul General Gunther Sales said they discussed ways the Philippines could take a more active role in the global space ecosystem during a recent meeting with Atienza.
Atienza shared details of her work in analog space missions and space nutrition, including her participation in the Hawaiʻi Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), a research program that simulates long-duration space missions in isolated environments.
She also noted her certification for suborbital spaceflight and her co-founding of the Astronaut Nutrition in Isolated Confined Extreme Environments (ANICE) network, which focuses on developing nutrition systems for astronauts in deep space missions. Her research includes efforts to design Filipino-inspired space food suited for long-duration space travel.
According to the consulate, Atienza is set to attend the ASCEND (Accelerating Space Commerce, Exploration, and New Discovery) conference in Washington, D.C. from May 19 to 21, 2026, organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where global space industry leaders and researchers are expected to gather.
Officials said the engagement reflects growing interest in strengthening Philippine participation in space science, research, and international collaboration in emerging aerospace technologies.
