South Korea’s parliament has made a decisive move to lift martial law, challenging President Yoon Suk Yeol’s order and deepening political tensions in the nation.
On Tuesday, the National Assembly, dominated by the opposition, voted to overturn Yoon’s controversial martial law order.
Yoon accused opposition members of sympathizing with North Korea, a claim that heightens existing tensions. The accusation suggests that the President believes the opposition may not be acting in the best interest of national security, especially given the historically strained relationship between South Korea and its northern neighbor.
Yoon initially put the martial law order in response to what he described as rising threats to national security and stability.
