San Antonio-area public schools will receive $647,156 in 2024 to expand mental health services for students across multiple campuses.

Officials said the funding will support hiring and training school-based mental health professionals, including counselors, social workers, and psychologists, and help retain existing staff. The grant will also allow districts to offer more counseling sessions, extend after-school or extended-hour services, and reduce wait times for students seeking support.

The funding will provide professional development for staff on identifying early signs of mental health concerns and connecting students to appropriate services.

Districts plan to use part of the grant for outreach to families, materials and resources on mental health education, telehealth options, and partnerships with community mental health providers for students needing higher-level care.

School administrators will track the use of services, student participation, and indicators such as attendance, behavioral incidents, and requests for crisis intervention to measure the grant’s impact.

Officials said the funding will support mental health services across elementary, middle, and high school campuses throughout the school year.
