San Antonio officials and Jewish community leaders will hold a public menorah lighting this week to honor a rabbi with ties to the city who died in a Hanukkah terror attack in Sydney, Australia that killed 15 people.

Local Jewish leaders said the rabbi had spent time in San Antonio, participated in religious and educational programs, and maintained connections with congregants in the city.

City officials said they are coordinating with law enforcement agencies to provide security during the event. Police plan to deploy visible personnel and monitor the surrounding area.

Organizers said the menorah lighting is open to the public and will include traditional Hanukkah blessings, songs, and brief remarks from community leaders.

One candle will be dedicated to the rabbi who died in the attack, with additional recognition for other victims when possible.

City officials said the necessary permits for the menorah display and public gathering have been issued.
