SAN ANTONIO — A lightning strike caused a condominium fire that killed one pet and resulted in an estimated $25,000 in structural damage, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire and found heavy flames on the first floor of a two-story condominium.
Dispatchers initially reported that a resident and a pet could be trapped inside. Crews found the resident safely outside, but a pet was later discovered dead inside the home.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze on the first and second floors, preventing it from spreading to neighboring units.
Officials said the lightning strike also affected electrical systems in several nearby condominiums. Fire crews inspected multiple units to check for hidden electrical hazards and ensure no additional fires had started.
The affected condominium sustained an estimated $25,000 in structural damage, while its contents were declared a total loss.
Fire officials reminded residents to take lightning strikes seriously and advised homeowners who believe their homes have been struck to ensure smoke alarms are working and watch for unusual odors, sounds or smoke that could indicate electrical damage. They urged residents to call 911 if they suspect any hazards.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
