DALLAS, Texas — President Donald Trump’s proposal to give every American $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections has drawn mixed reactions from Houston-area residents, with some calling it an attempt to buy votes while others said the money would help cover expenses.

Trump made the pledge Wednesday during the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas. The proposal could cost an estimated $1 trillion and raises questions about how the government would fund the payments.

Some residents criticized the proposal and questioned whether voters should accept money tied to an election.

“He is trying to buy your vote but it’s the law and not the American way,” Joe Goana of Pecan Villa wrote.

Tiffany Huff of Red Bluff called the proposal a “HUGE no,” saying that “buying votes instead of earning them is enough of a red flag.”

Other commenters expressed skepticism based on previous promises they said had not materialized.

“Ha! Like all the other checks he’s ‘promised’ … tariff refunds, DOGE cut refunds, TSA and ATC bonuses … etc.,” Mike H. of Champions Park wrote.

Gary Henderson of Sunrise Lakes also mocked the proposal, while Kim Mann of Winchester Country pointed to rising costs.

“No. Still waiting on the last $5,000 to help pay for the rising cost of EVERYTHING,” Mann wrote.

Other residents said the proposal would not affect their voting decisions because they already support Republican candidates.

“No, I was going to vote for him regardless!” Robert Meyer of Deerfield Village wrote, adding his support for Trump.

Colleen Lyman of Mission West similarly said she planned to vote for Republican candidates.

Some residents took a more transactional approach and said they would accept the money if the government provided it.

“You can have my vote for 5k,” Cheryl Adeoye of Wimbledon Country wrote, saying she could use the money to pay bills.

Other commenters compared Trump’s proposal with payments issued under previous administrations.

“Much better than the $600 we got under the last guy,” Jimmy Hauser of Bellaire wrote.

The discussion on Nextdoor drew more than 160 comments as of Thursday morning, reflecting differing views among Houston-area residents about whether the proposed payment could influence their votes.
