HOUSTON — As Memorial Day approaches, volunteers in Houston are once again taking part in a tradition aimed at honoring fallen service members at the Houston National Cemetery.
For its sixth consecutive year, Houston Millennials, together with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8790, is hosting its “Flags of Honor” Memorial Day flag-planting event on Sunday morning along Veterans Memorial Drive.
The activity brings together volunteers from across the Houston area to place American flags at the gravesites of military veterans, creating a visual tribute across the cemetery grounds ahead of the holiday.
Organizers said the goal is to refocus attention on the meaning of Memorial Day — remembrance and gratitude for those who died in service to the United States.
“Memorial Day is more than just a three-day weekend,” said Ivan Sanchez, president of Houston Millennials. “It’s a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.”
Participants are encouraged to read each veteran’s name aloud and say “thank you” as they place flags, a small but symbolic gesture meant to personalize remembrance.
Event leaders said the tradition continues to grow each year, drawing volunteers of all ages who want to contribute to honoring fallen service members in a direct, hands-on way.
