Frankie Pangilinan sees ‘Edjop’ acting debut as a form of advocacy

MANILA, Philippines — Frankie Pangilinan said her concern for the Philippines and issues affecting the country influenced her decision to make her acting debut in “Edjop,” a political drama inspired by the life of late student leader Edgar “Edjop” Jopson.

Pangilinan, who plays Joy Jopson in the film, said she does not consider herself an activist but views filmmaking as one way to express her advocacy.

“I’m too shy to call myself an activist because there’s so many students and other activists,” Pangilinan told Inquirer Entertainment Thursday after the film’s media conference in Quezon City.

Pangilinan said she had joined rallies in the past but hesitated to compare her involvement with activists such as Jopson, whom she said made far greater sacrifices.

She said she cares deeply about the Philippines and the issues explored in the film.

“Creating this film is one way that this is our version of activism, this is our fight,” Pangilinan said.

The project also has a personal connection for Pangilinan and her father, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan. She recalled that her father introduced her to Jopson’s story when she was in high school by giving her Benjamin Pimentel’s book “UG.”

Pangilinan said Jopson was one of her father’s idols. Her mother, actress Sharon Cuneta, also learned about Jopson through her husband’s memories.

Pangilinan said her parents did not require her to seek permission before accepting the role. Instead, they asked whether she wanted to take on the project.

She said her parents have encouraged her and her siblings to develop their own opinions, including when they disagree with each other.

In “Edjop,” Pangilinan portrays Joy Jopson, wife of Elijah Canlas’ titular character.

Jopson served as president of the National Union of Students of the Philippines and became known for engaging with students, workers and government officials.

Pangilinan said she enjoyed working on the film and remains open to future acting projects depending on the material.

As she starts her acting career, Pangilinan also drew inspiration from her mother’s work. She said she felt shy about directly asking Cuneta for acting advice and instead studied her performances, including her role in the 1996 film “Madrasta.”

Pangilinan said she particularly admires Cuneta’s restrained acting style, which she considers difficult to master.

Directed by Katski Flores, “Edjop” also stars Jodi Sta. Maria, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Cedrick Juan, Teroy Guzman, Gab Pangilinan and Issa Litton, among others.

“Edjop” opens in Philippine cinemas Sept. 16.
