LOS ANGELES — Disney+ is developing a television adaptation of the fantasy story “Ella Enchanted,” with actor Anne Hathaway attached as an executive producer, according to industry reports on Wednesday.

The series is based on the novel “Ella Enchanted” by Gail Carson Levine, which previously inspired the 2004 film Ella Enchanted starring Hathaway.

The project remains in early development at Disney+. Ilana Wolpert will write the series, while Beth Schwartz will serve as showrunner. Both will also executive produce alongside Hathaway, her husband Adam Shulman, and Jonathan Rice.

According to Deadline, the adaptation will differ from the film and will follow the tone of the original novel more closely.

The story centers on Ella after her mother’s death as she attends boarding school, discovers details about her curse of obedience, and develops a relationship with a prince.

No casting announcements or release date have been announced.
