Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. (AIC) is on track to acquire the contract for the development of the Bohol-Panglao International Airport, valued at approximately P4.53 billion. The infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group is expected to expand its airport portfolio with this new addition. The deal is likely to proceed as no other companies submitted bids for the project, leaving AIC as the sole contender.

Transportation Undersecretary Timothy John Batan confirmed the developments during a recent virtual meeting of the pre-qualification bids and awards committee. Batan stated that the committee is working towards awarding the contract by November. This development is part of the government’s efforts to enhance regional airport infrastructure across the country.

The Bohol-Panglao International Airport, which serves as a gateway to one of the Philippines’ popular tourist destinations, Bohol, has been operational since 2018, replacing the old Tagbilaran Airport. The new facility caters to both domestic and international flights, designed to accommodate the increasing number of tourists visiting the region.

Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. is part of the larger Aboitiz Group, which is known for its diverse interests in power, banking, food, and land. The move to develop the Bohol-Panglao International Airport aligns with AIC’s strategy to expand its footprint in the country’s infrastructure sector. The company has been actively participating in government initiatives aimed at improving airport facilities nationwide.

The lack of competing bids for the airport project could be attributed to various factors, including the large investment required and the technical capabilities needed. The Philippine government has been encouraging private sector participation in infrastructure development, seeing it as a crucial component in boosting the country’s economic growth.

Aboitiz InfraCapital has previously undertaken several airport projects. Its involvement in the development and management of airports is part of its broader strategy to contribute to national progress through infrastructure. The company emphasizes adopting sustainable practices and innovative solutions in its projects.

The Bohol-Panglao International Airport is strategically important for the tourism industry, a significant contributor to the local economy. It not only facilitates easier access to Bohol’s famed beaches and cultural sites but also supports local businesses and communities.

Improvements and expansions planned for the airport aim to enhance passenger experience, increase operational efficiency, and support future growth in tourist arrivals. Aboitiz InfraCapital’s role will be critical in realizing these objectives, in line with national goals for infrastructure development.

As the country emerges from the economic challenges brought about by the global pandemic, infrastructure projects like the Bohol-Panglao International Airport are seen as vital for recovery. The development of such facilities is expected to generate employment, stimulate local economies, and attract further investment.

Transportation Undersecretary Batan highlighted the significance of public-private partnerships in achieving infrastructure goals. He expressed optimism that the Bohol-Panglao airport project, under AIC’s stewardship, would serve as a model for future collaborations.
