A Zionsville man, Doug Pendleton, died after pushing his wife, Linda Pendleton, out of the path of a falling tree during a birthday trip to South Bend.
The incident occurred during a car show, which the couple attended to celebrate Doug’s 77th birthday.
According to reports, the tree fell suddenly during the event. Doug acted quickly, pushing Linda to safety. He was struck by the tree and died at the scene. Linda sustained serious injuries, including a broken neck and multiple fractures, and is currently recovering.
Doug Pendleton was known in the Zionsville community as the owner of Grapevine Cottage, a local wine store. Following the incident, Linda announced that she intends to continue operating the business in his memory. Grapevine Cottage has been part of the community for several years.
The event where the accident occurred is an annual car show held in South Bend. Emergency services responded to the scene. Authorities have not released additional information regarding the cause of the tree fall or any ongoing investigation.
