Austin-based alt-rock band Culture Wars has released its latest single Lies, written by frontman Alex Dugan and inspired by what he described as a “nasty breakup.”
Dugan said in an exclusive virtual interview with The STAR that the song explores betrayal and dishonesty, adding that he wrote it a few years ago during college. He noted that the track has since evolved sonically to align with the band’s signature sound.
“Even now, it still kind of brings something out when we play it live. But it’s a song that’s kind of stuck around for a little while for us and so we’re very happy to finally put it out in this form for the album,” Dugan said.
The new single follows the group’s hit Typical Ways, which has reached more than five million streams on Spotify. Dugan added that while Lies was written from personal experience, the theme of deception can also apply to politics and broader issues.
Culture Wars, composed of Dugan, David Grayson, Dillon Randolph, Caleb Contreras, and Josh Stirm, is preparing to launch its album If Not Now, When? The band previously performed in Manila as the opening act for concerts by LANY and Maroon 5.
The group said it plans to return to the Philippines for future shows as part of its ongoing rollout of solo gigs worldwide. Dugan shared that Manila is included in their tour plans, possibly by early next year.
“As I always say, keep the sisig hot because we’ll be right back,” Dugan said.
