LOS ANGELES — Miley Cyrus celebrated two decades since the premiere of Hannah Montana by reuniting with the show’s cast for the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” in Los Angeles on Monday.

Sporting the show’s signature blond hair and bangs, Cyrus reflected on the milestone with a mix of nostalgia and perspective.

Cyrus, who began the Disney Channel series at age 13 as Miley Stewart, told The Associated Press that revisiting the show as an adult allows her to appreciate it in a way she could not amid the original chaos and demanding schedule.

The special, now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, was filmed in front of a live audience and features archival footage alongside an interview with Cyrus conducted by podcast host Alex Cooper. Musical performances include the iconic theme song “The Best of Both Worlds” and a new song dedicated to her younger self.

The event also featured appearances from family and friends, including Cyrus’ father Billy Ray Cyrus, Selena Gomez, who played a rival on the show, and singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, who cited Miley’s influence on her career.

Jason Earles, who portrayed Miley’s brother Jackson, reflected on how the show now highlights dated references like flip phones, while Cody Linley, who played on-and-off boyfriend Jake Ryan, noted the challenge of separating teen heartthrob fame from reality. Country singer Lainey Wilson, who attended the premiere, recalled performing as a Hannah Montana impersonator during her early career.

Cyrus paid tribute to her fans and cast members, saying, “Without you all, this show would have never been what it is… Tonight isn’t about looking back into the past, but it’s about what it means to us still tonight.”
