The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a statewide campaign to promote pedestrian safety in observance of National Pedestrian Safety Month this October.
Through its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign, TxDOT seeks to raise awareness among both drivers and pedestrians about the importance of road safety.
The campaign features on-the-ground street teams stationed in high-traffic areas to remind drivers to slow down, stay alert, and yield to pedestrians—especially in places without traffic signals. Pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
According to TxDOT data, 773 people lost their lives and 1,454 sustained serious injuries in pedestrian-related crashes across Texas in 2024.
October remains one of the most dangerous months, with reduced daylight contributing to an increase in incidents. Last year, 89 pedestrians were killed in October alone, prompting TxDOT to intensify its outreach efforts.
The campaign also employs walking billboards and public education efforts to spread messages about road safety. TxDOT urges drivers and pedestrians alike to follow traffic rules, remain attentive, and prioritize safe behaviors on the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded over 7,000 pedestrian fatalities and 68,000 injuries nationwide in 2023.
TxDOT’s Pedestrian Safety Action Plan outlines measures such as improving crosswalks, enhancing roadway designs, and expanding public awareness programs.
Complementing these efforts, the Texas Transportation Commission has announced infrastructure projects that include 44 sidewalk improvements, 30 shared-use paths, and 10 new bikeways across the state.
The campaign also coincides with the Halloween season, a time of increased pedestrian activity. TxDOT reminds drivers and trick-or-treaters to remain cautious and alert to prevent accidents.
Through its sustained efforts, TxDOT aims to create safer road environments and reduce pedestrian-related incidents. The “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign underscores the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and promoting responsible road use throughout Texas.
