SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Trump administration is launching a six-month pilot program in San Antonio to identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities in water systems and help utilities address them at no cost.
The program, called “Project Watershed 250,” will use Texas as a testing ground before federal officials consider expanding the model nationwide, Route 50 reported.
The Office of the National Cyber Director, Texas Cyber Command, the office of Gov. Greg Abbott and private-sector partners will participate in the initiative.
The program will help water utilities assess and address vulnerabilities using cybersecurity tools and artificial intelligence from private companies.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency will serve as federal partners. Microsoft and industrial cybersecurity company Dragos will also participate.
Federal officials plan to use lessons from the Texas pilot to develop a model that could support water utilities across the country.
The initiative comes as federal agencies and state officials work to strengthen cybersecurity protections for water infrastructure, which relies on digital systems to operate and manage critical services.
