MANILA, Philippines — P-pop group SB19 has been named the Philippines’ newest tourism ambassador, with the Department of Tourism (DOT) recognizing the quintet as one of the country’s “finest representatives of Filipino culture.”

The DOT announced the appointment on Sunday and sent SB19 a “galingbayan” box while the group is on tour in the United States. The package draws inspiration from the traditional balikbayan box sent by overseas Filipino workers to their families in the Philippines.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said SB19’s global popularity makes the group an effective partner in promoting Philippine tourism.

“SB19’s talent is undeniable—their music is powerful, and so is their influence. They have the reach to connect with fans across the US, Europe, ASEAN, and beyond,” Angara-Mathay said.

She said the group has inspired Filipino-Americans and fans across Southeast Asia to travel to the Philippines, adding that SB19 gives international supporters “real reasons to visit the Philippines.”

As tourism ambassadors, SB19 will encourage fans worldwide to visit the country and experience its culture.

Group member Josh Cullen welcomed the appointment, saying SB19 hopes to make a meaningful contribution by promoting Filipino culture through its international performances.

“Matagal na po itong moment na ito na inaantay namin. We want to make a genuine difference, so we’re teaming up with partners who get our vision,” Josh said.

In a separate Instagram post, the group wrote: “Representing the Philippines on and off the stage. We’re proud to begin this new chapter as the Philippines’ newest tourism ambassadors. From the Philippines to the world!”

SB19’s appointment follows the designation of P-pop girl group BINI as tourism ambassadors earlier this month and comes ahead of the group’s scheduled performances at the Lollapalooza and Summer Sonic music festivals.
