SAN ANTONIO — More than 100 people gathered at San Antonio City Hall on Friday before marching through downtown to demand justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, the 52-year-old Mexican national fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an enforcement operation in Houston earlier this week.

Organized by San Antonio Venceremos and the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the demonstration featured a memorial with Salgado Araujo’s photograph, cempasúchil flowers and candles before protesters marched through downtown carrying signs and chanting, “Justice for Lorenzo.”

David Cruz of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which joined the protest, called for a transparent and independent investigation into the shooting.

“We want a complete, transparent, independent investigation,” Cruz said, adding that the family, community and the public deserve access to all available evidence surrounding the use of deadly force.

ICE has said an agent fired in self-defense after Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to drive his van into an officer during a targeted operation. An attorney representing two passengers in the van has disputed that account, while federal officials have acknowledged Salgado Araujo was not the intended target of the operation.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Participants said they attended the march to honor Salgado Araujo’s memory, call for accountability and express concerns over federal immigration enforcement. Some also urged greater civic engagement and continued public advocacy in response to the incident.
