Ruthless Taduran halts Alvarez to retain IBF minimumweight title

MANILA, Philippines — Pedro Taduran retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight title after stopping “Smiley” Gustavo Perez Alvarez in the seventh round Saturday at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California.

Taduran sent Perez Alvarez to the canvas in the fourth round with a body shot, followed by additional knockdowns in the sixth and seventh rounds. Referee Thomas Taylor stopped the fight at 1:34 of the seventh round, declaring Taduran the winner.

The Filipino boxer improved his professional record to 20-4-1, with 14 knockouts, while Perez Alvarez fell to 16-2.
