The High Commission of the French Republic in French Polynesia on Tuesday, 29 July, issued a wave alert for the Marquesas Islands following an earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.
The commission stated that waves ranging from 1.10 meters to 4 meters may reach Nuku Hiva starting around 1:00 a.m. local time (1100 GMT) on Wednesday.
Authorities said the islands of Ua Huka and Hiva Oa may also be affected by wave activity.
The earthquake occurred in the early hours near the Kamchatka Peninsula and triggered the alert for French Polynesia.
Emergency services have been placed on standby.
Residents and visitors have been advised to follow instructions from local officials and monitor official announcements.
No immediate damage or injuries have been reported.
