MANILA, Philippines — Lawmakers in the Philippines on Wednesday called for urgent government action on the pending U.S. extradition request for Apollo Quiboloy, the leader of the religious group Kingdom of Jesus Christ, who faces multiple criminal charges in the United States.
The U.S. government submitted a formal extradition request in 2023, citing charges that include alleged human trafficking and other criminal offenses. Quiboloy has denied all allegations.
Members of the Philippine legislature expressed concern that Quiboloy’s significant local influence could delay the legal process.
They emphasized the importance of addressing the request promptly to uphold justice and preserve international cooperation under the Philippines-U.S. extradition treaty.
The Philippine Department of Justice is currently reviewing the request and its legal implications. Lawmakers stressed the need for transparency and urgency, warning that Quiboloy’s political and social ties could hinder judicial proceedings.
