HOUSTON — The Philippine Consulate General in Houston joined the Philippine Nurses Association of Metro Houston (PNAMH) and the PNAMH Foundation during a gala honoring Filipino nurses and inducting the organization’s new executive board.

The event included the conferment of the Outstanding Filipino Nurse and Heart of Nursing Awards and the induction of the new PNAMH Executive Board led by President Alex Sardual.

Philippine Consul General Gunther Sales delivered remarks during the program and administered the oath of office to the incoming board members.

Using the gala’s “Ilustrado Inspired” theme, Sales described Filipino nurses as modern-day ilustrados who apply professional knowledge and service in their work. He also noted the role of Filipino nurses in Houston, which is home to the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex.

Sales said Filipino nurses serve at the center of the U.S. healthcare system and highlighted “malasakit,” or compassion, as a defining characteristic of Filipino nursing.

“The Philippines is not a place we leave. It is a place we carry,” Sales said during his remarks.

He also said the Philippine Consulate continues to pursue cooperation between nursing education systems in the Philippines and Texas to support professional exchange and training opportunities in the nursing field.
