MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine sports community is in mourning following the tragic death of Mervin Guarte, a celebrated Southeast Asian Games gold medalist.

Authorities reported that Guarte was found dead early Tuesday morning in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, after allegedly being stabbed while sleeping at a friend’s house.

Guarte, a standout middle-distance runner, was a key figure in the national athletics team, earning multiple medals in regional competitions, including gold at the Southeast Asian Games.

Law enforcement in Calapan City is investigating the incident, with initial reports indicating that Guarte was staying at a friend’s residence when the alleged stabbing occurred.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about suspects or motives, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) expressed their condolences, with PATAFA President noting, “We have lost a true champion and a dedicated athlete. Mervin was not only a remarkable sportsman but also an inspiration to many young athletes. His contributions to Philippine athletics will never be forgotten.”

Guarte’s teammates and coaches, who worked closely with him throughout his career, have also shared their grief. One of his fellow athletes said, “He was more than just a teammate; he was a brother to us. His spirit and determination were unmatched. We will miss his presence dearly.”

Throughout his career, Guarte set national records and earned widespread recognition for his skill and commitment to the sport. His unexpected passing has touched not only those in athletics but the broader Philippine sports community.

Tributes have poured in from athletes, coaches, and fans across social media, sharing memories and expressing sorrow.

A memorial service to honor Guarte’s legacy will be held soon, with details to be announced. The service will be open to the public, allowing fans and the community to pay their respects.

Guarte’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time but has expressed gratitude for the support and love they have received from the sports community. They are working closely with authorities as the investigation into his death continues.
