Paraguay confirmed on Monday that it will maintain full diplomatic relations with Taiwan and announced an upcoming visit by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te in August.
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña made the statement during a meeting in Asunción with Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, who led a delegation of about 30 business representatives. The visit reinforces Paraguay’s role as Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in South America.
“Paraguay will stand by Taiwan,” President Peña said, reaffirming the country’s commitment despite ongoing pressure from China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and discourages international recognition of the island.
President Lai’s visit will aim to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and technology. Officials from both sides confirmed that the agenda includes discussions on strengthening economic and diplomatic ties.
Foreign Minister Lin highlighted the enduring partnership between the two democracies and emphasized Taiwan’s goal of expanding its global presence through alliances like the one with Paraguay.
