LOS ANGELES — Mariska Hargitay will host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will air on NBC on Sept. 14, NBCUniversal announced Tuesday.

The ceremony will take place at the Peacock Theater and will also stream on Peacock. The announcement came one day before the Television Academy is scheduled to reveal this year’s Emmy nominations.

Hargitay has starred as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 1999. She has earned eight Emmy nominations for the role and won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2006. The series is expected to surpass 600 episodes when its 28th season premieres this fall.

In addition to acting, Hargitay has become an advocate for survivors of sexual assault through her work connected to the long-running crime drama.

She could also receive an Emmy nomination this year for directing and producing My Mom Jayne, a documentary about her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield.

Hargitay becomes one of the few non-comedians to host the Emmys in recent years. Comedian Nate Bargatze hosted last year’s ceremony on CBS.

The Television Academy will announce this year’s nominees on Wednesday. Among the programs expected to receive multiple nominations are Pluribus and The Pitt, starring Noah Wyle.
