MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed that Mary Jane Veloso is set to return to the Philippines after spending 14 years on Indonesia’s death row.

Justice Assistant Secretary Jose Dominic Clavano IV announced at a press briefing that the Philippine delegates in Jakarta signed agreement for Veloso’s transfer.

The transfer marks the end of a long-standing case that has drawn international attention since Veloso’s arrest in 2010.

Veloso was arrested at Yogyakarta airport in Indonesia over a decade ago.

Authorities found 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her suitcase. Veloso claimed she was unaware of the drugs, maintaining her innocence throughout the trial.

She stated she was duped into carrying the luggage by a recruiter who had promised her a job in Malaysia. Despite her claims, Veloso was sentenced to death by an Indonesian court in 2010.

Her case caught global attention, highlighting issues around human trafficking and drug trafficking. Various human rights groups and the Philippine government have been advocating for her clemency.

In 2015, Veloso received a reprieve at the last minute. This reprieve came after the alleged recruiter surrendered to Philippine authorities, allowing more time to investigate her case further.

Veloso’s family has expressed relief over the news of her impending return. Her parents have been vocal advocates, campaigning for her release. The family looks forward to celebrating the Christmas holiday together for the first time in many years.

The exact date of her arrival has not been disclosed for security reasons.
