MANILA, Philippines– A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu on Tuesday Sept 30, at 9:59 p.m., killing more than 60 people, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

The earthquake caused damage across areas in the province. Rescue teams and emergency responders were deployed to affected locations, where search and rescue operations are in progress. Authorities are working to locate and assist individuals trapped under structures.

Buildings and infrastructure collapsed or sustained damage. Hospitals are treating injuries, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development is providing shelter to displaced families.

The earthquake disrupted power and communication lines. Crews are working to restore services. Roads and bridges are blocked, affecting rescue and relief operations.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is coordinating efforts with local government units. International groups have offered support.

Schools and government offices in affected areas are closed for safety checks. Authorities have advised residents to prepare for aftershocks. Seismologists are monitoring the area and assessing risk.

Government units continue to assess the impact and will issue updates.
