MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said Friday it will continue its crackdown on the spread of false information following the arrest of former broadcaster Jay Sonza over a cyberlibel case.
In a statement, the PCO commended the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for carrying out Sonza’s arrest Thursday evening. The case stems from allegations that he circulated fabricated medical records involving Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
“We will continue to work with law enforcement, the media and responsible online platforms to identify, investigate and prosecute those who disseminate falsehoods,” PCO Secretary Dave Gomez said.
“Public discourse must remain free, but it must also be truthful, fair, and orderly. Speak freely, but not falsely,” he added.
The PCO said the arrest forms part of the government’s broader efforts to address misinformation and maintain what it described as a responsible democratic space.
Gomez also highlighted the agency’s Oplan Kontra Fake News initiative, which he said aims to hold individuals accountable for spreading false information that could undermine public trust or cause harm.
The PCO has previously submitted several cases involving alleged fake news to the Department of Justice for investigation and possible prosecution.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that a warrant of arrest was issued by a Pasay City Regional Trial Court, leading to Sonza’s apprehension. He said Sonza remains in NBI custody.
