Immigrant families from 19 nations in Texas have reduced in-person contact with government offices and service providers after the Trump administration announced that nationals from those countries would no longer be eligible for legal immigration status under a federal program.
State and local immigrant advocacy groups in Houston, Dallas, and other cities reported that families stopped attending public meetings and limited visits to service providers.
School officials and social service providers said some immigrant parents have decreased participation in school events, medical appointments, and public assistance programs. Advocacy groups and hotline services said inquiries increased regarding how the policy affects applications for legal status.
Attorneys and community organizations stated they continue to monitor federal guidance and provide updates to families affected by the program changes.
