SAN JUAN, La Union — The Recording Academy is reviewing the future of its newly created Asian Pop Music Performance category after criticism from artists, industry leaders and fans, including K-pop group BTS’ decision not to submit its latest album for next year’s Grammy Awards.
The Academy announced the category in June as one of five new awards for the upcoming ceremony. It aims to recognize “artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances” from or widely recognized in Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop.
The category drew criticism from some fans and artists who said separating Asian pop from other global music categories could limit recognition for Asian artists.
BTS announced in July that it would not submit its album “Arirang” for consideration, saying the group wanted its music to be heard without being defined by region or language.
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. previously defended the category, saying it was created to highlight the diversity and growth of pop music from Asia.
Mason has since acknowledged concerns raised during discussions with artists and other stakeholders. He said Academy executives are consulting with its Board and Awards & Nominations Committee as they consider how to proceed.
“It’s clear from our numerous conversations with many stakeholders over the past two weeks that, regardless of our intent and desire to be even more inclusive, there are some artists in this space who feel that this category isn’t representing the music they work so hard to create, in the way they wish,” Mason said.
He added that the Academy aims to ensure that artists and music communities feel represented and heard in its decisions.
The Academy is expected to decide on the category soon. The submission deadline for the upcoming Grammy Awards is Aug. 21, while the first round of voting starts Oct. 12.
