LAS VEGAS, United States — Director Takashi Yamazaki said in April 2026 at CinemaCon that the upcoming film Godzilla Minus Zero will bring audiences closer to the character Godzilla through enhanced sound and visual effects in theaters.

Yamazaki said advancements in cinematic technology allow the monster’s roars and footsteps to resonate more strongly with audiences, emphasizing the theatrical experience.

He said filmmakers share responsibility for drawing audiences back to cinemas by creating new viewing experiences. He made the remarks after presenting a preview of the film at the convention in Las Vegas.

The film, scheduled for release in U.S. theaters in November, stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe. It is set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One.

Yamazaki said the story centers on the Shikishima family, whose stability is disrupted by a destructive event. He said the narrative explores how characters respond to loss and attempt to rebuild their lives.

He said directing a follow-up to “Godzilla Minus One,” which received the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, created new challenges due to expectations set by the earlier film.

Yamazaki said the new production allows him to introduce visuals not achieved in the previous installment. A teaser shown at CinemaCon included a scene of Godzilla facing the Statue of Liberty in New York.

He said the film primarily focuses on Japan despite scenes set abroad and added that story considerations guided creative decisions.

Yamazaki said the theatrical format remains essential for the character, noting that large-scale presentation enhances the viewing experience.

The film remains in production ahead of its planned release.
