Gene Hackman, the iconic Oscar-winning actor, has passed away at the age of 94 in New Mexico.
The chief medical investigator confirmed that Hackman died of natural causes, specifically heart disease, with Alzheimer’s disease being a contributing factor.
Hackman’s death comes just a week after the passing of his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who tragically died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease contracted from infected rodents or their droppings.
The couple, who lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, spent their final days together at home.
Hackman, celebrated for his distinguished career in Hollywood, was known for standout roles in films such as The French Connection, for which he won an Academy Award, and Unforgiven.
He retired from acting in 2004, later pursuing a career as a novelist.
Authorities revealed that Hackman was found in a mudroom at his home, with evidence suggesting he may have passed away several days prior to being discovered.
Investigators noted the last recorded activity of his pacemaker, which helped pinpoint the time of his death. No foul play was suspected in either Hackman’s or Arakawa’s death.
The circumstances surrounding Arakawa’s death, due to the rare hantavirus, remain under investigation.
The disease, which is typically linked to rural environments, is not easily transmitted between humans, but can be fatal if untreated.
Santa Fe County officials have not revealed where Arakawa may have contracted the virus, though it is known that both she and Hackman died at their home.
