Former Makati City Mayor Abby Binay-Campos has publicly responded to criticism from her sister and current mayor, Nancy Binay, over the ₱9 billion Makati Subway Project settlement, further fueling an ongoing political rift within the influential Binay family.

In a press conference held Friday, Binay-Campos defended the deal she brokered during her tenure and accused the current administration of politicizing the issue.

She alleged that Mayor Nancy Binay’s statements distorted facts and were aimed at tarnishing her nine-year record as mayor.

“The settlement could have been handled quietly,” Binay-Campos said, implying that the current administration’s decision to disclose it publicly was intentional and potentially malicious.

She emphasized that negotiations related to the project were confidential and subject to both international and governmental review, and that the settlement followed proper protocols.

She further stated, “If there was confusion or concern, my sister could have just called me,” expressing disappointment over the lack of direct communication.

Binay-Campos criticized the decision to air the dispute in public, suggesting that it prioritizes political drama over genuine governance.

The Makati Subway Project, once positioned as a landmark infrastructure initiative under Binay-Campos’s leadership, has become a flashpoint for political division.

Mayor Nancy Binay raised questions about the financial implications and legality of the settlement, which involves a multibillion-peso agreement with private stakeholders.
