Detective Sergeant Jeff Sheaman is set to present a high school diploma to David Lew, a young man he saved as a toddler 15 years ago, during a graduation ceremony in Rock Springs, Wyoming. The event will celebrate a significant moment in both their lives, providing an opportunity to acknowledge the enduring impact of Sheaman’s rescue.

In 2008, Detective Sheaman, then a new deputy with the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, rescued three-year-old Lew from a perilous situation on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The Lew family, stranded during a storm, faced hypothermia. Sheaman’s prompt intervention ensured the child’s safety.

The detective’s heroic actions left a lasting impression on Lew’s family. Over the years, this connection deepened, culminating in Lew’s request for Sheaman to present his diploma at the graduation ceremony.

Lew’s gesture was conveyed in a heartfelt letter to Sheaman, bringing emotions to the retiring detective. The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the emotional impact of the letter on Sheaman.

The letter thanked Sheaman for his life-saving actions and expressed gratitude for participating in a pivotal life milestone. This act symbolizes the bond formed between the detective and Lew, highlighting the lasting influence of Sheaman’s bravery.

Sheaman has served over 20 years in law enforcement and is set to retire soon. The opportunity to present the diploma offers a fitting end to his career, reflecting dedication and service to the community.

The graduation ceremony in Rock Springs will honor Lew’s academic achievements while recognizing Sheaman’s contributions. It serves as a testament to the impact of first responders and their vital role in the community.

Lew and Sheaman’s story resonates with many, illustrating the positive outcomes of intervention and the enduring relationships formed through acts of kindness and bravery.

The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office has expressed pride in Sheaman’s accomplishments and the special bond between him and Lew. The event is expected to draw significant attention, showcasing the power of gratitude and the importance of acknowledging those who make a difference in the lives of others.
