The Civil Society Network for Human Trafficking reported that more than a dozen Filipinos are among the individuals trapped in a guarded compound in Myawaddy, near the Thailand-Myanmar border.
They are part of a group that includes victims from over 60 countries.
According to the organization, these individuals were initially lured by offers of high-paying jobs in Thailand’s information technology sector.
Upon arrival, however, they were coerced into working for cyber scam operations targeting victims worldwide, including in the United States, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.
The operations are allegedly run by Chinese criminal syndicates operating across Myanmar. The trapped workers have reportedly refused to continue participating in the scams, despite facing threats of torture from their captors.
