SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County residents will have an opportunity to provide input on county spending priorities as officials begin a series of budget town halls this week while preparing a proposed $2.8 billion budget for the next fiscal year.
County officials are finalizing a spending plan that funds the Sheriff’s Office, jail, courts, roads and other government operations.
Officials said the budget process comes as property tax exemptions are expected to reduce future revenue and create a potential budget gap.
“Our priority is to maintain the expenses as best as we can, and avoid cuts,” Budget and Finance Director Tanya Gaitan said. “Our last resort is to recommend a tax increase. So we have not recommended that. But again, that is an option for the court to consider in future budget years.”
The first town hall is scheduled for Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Hall on San Antonio’s East Side.
County officials said residents will be able to hear presentations, ask questions and provide feedback before the Commissioners Court adopts the final budget in September.
Additional town halls are scheduled at the following locations:
- June 25, Walker Ranch Senior Center, 835 W. Rhapsody Dr.
- July 1, Harlandale Civic Center, 115 W. Southcross Blvd.
- July 7, San Antonio Food Bank Valero Room, 5200 Historic Old Hwy. 90
The county has also launched an online survey in English and Spanish to gather public input. The survey will remain open through July 22.
The county’s next fiscal year begins on Oct. 1.
