Ectopic pregnancy deaths rise as Texas delays maternal mortality report

Deaths involving ectopic pregnancies in the United States nearly doubled from 2020 through 2025, while Texas and other states with strict abortion bans recorded higher-than-average death rates, according to a ProPublica analysis.

Nearly 200 women died following ectopic pregnancies during the six-year period, compared with about 100 deaths during the previous six years, the analysis found.

ProPublica data reporter Andrea Suozzo, who co-authored the report, said the increase began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when disruptions to health care may have contributed to delayed diagnoses.

The number of deaths remained elevated after the pandemic, according to the analysis.

Texas has also delayed the release of its latest maternal mortality report. The state now plans to release the report after the November midterm elections and weeks before lawmakers return to Austin.

The delay has raised concerns about whether policymakers will have enough time to review the findings and respond to maternal mortality trends.

Kari White, a nonresident fellow in maternal and reproductive health at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy and executive and scientific director of Resound Research for Reproductive Health, has raised concerns about the delay.

Lawsuit challenges ICE access to polling places

Meanwhile, Common Cause, the League of United Latin American Citizens and other organizations have sued the Trump administration over the possibility that federal immigration agents could enter polling places during the November midterm elections.

Homeland Security officials have said Immigration and Customs Enforcement will not patrol voting sites or conduct operations targeting them. However, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said armed agents could enter a polling location to respond to a threat or arrest someone they are tracking.

The groups argue that the exception could intimidate voters, particularly Latino communities, naturalized citizens and families with mixed immigration status.

The organizations are asking a federal judge to block armed immigration officers from entering polling places and ballot-drop locations.

Maryam Jazini Dorcheh, vice president of litigation at Common Cause, is discussing the lawsuit, its legal basis and its potential impact on voters.
