WHARTON COUNTY, Texas — Amazon plans to invest $10 billion in a 13-building data center project near Boling-Iago in Wharton County, with construction already underway and the project’s power demand and timeline still unclear.
Amazon said the project, located about 10 miles southeast of Wharton, could create about 300 permanent jobs, including 150 positions expected to come online by mid-2027.
The company began site preparation and construction earlier this year.
The project comes as Gov. Greg Abbott conducts an audit of data centers in Texas, which has raised questions about the industry’s electricity demand and its impact on the state’s power grid.
According to minutes from a January special session of the Wharton County Commissioners Court, the project could generate 4,000 to 7,000 construction jobs and require about $10 billion in investment.
Amazon was not seeking tax abatements from local school districts, according to the meeting minutes.
Amazon will hold an open house on the project at the Boling Community Center at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
