The Austin City Council on Thursday approved the city budget for the next fiscal year, which begins October 1 and ends Sept. 30.
The budget includes more than $38 million in reductions to social services and other city programs.
The budget sets funding levels for departments including public safety, transportation, parks, housing, utilities, and administrative services. City officials said the reductions respond to revenue limits, slower growth in some income sources, and higher operating costs.
Council members reviewed data on property tax collections, sales tax, utility transfers, and other income before approving the plan. Staff said core operations such as police, fire, and emergency medical services will continue under the new spending plan.
Officials said departments will review contracts, staffing, and program scopes to adjust to the new funding levels. Existing agreements with service providers may be modified, renewed at lower amounts, or allowed to expire.
The budget maintains some previously approved housing, homelessness, and public health initiatives at reduced or flat funding.
City departments will now implement the budget, adjust work plans, update contracts, and prepare for the fiscal year. Officials said they will monitor revenues and expenditures and provide reports to the council and public.
