DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas City Council postponed action Thursday on a resolution directing city staff to explore relocating City Hall functions and redeveloping the current site, following more than seven hours of debate and public comment.

Council members voted 9-6 on amendments to the resolution, with members including Cara Mendelsohn, Paul Ridley, Laura Cadena, Paula Blackmon, Adam Bazaldua, and Bill Roth forming a bloc to slow momentum and consider alternative sites. The resolution would have tasked City Manager Kimberly Tolbert with examining options to move 311, 911, and emergency operations and to relocate other city staff.

Tolbert emphasized that no final decisions or financing plans have been identified for City Hall’s renovation or relocation. Several council members expressed concern about making a hasty decision regarding the 47-year-old building.

Council member Chad West, who authored the resolution, said the issue involves downtown development challenges and opportunities and relies on city staff for complete information. Mendelsohn and Ridley successfully proposed deferring the vote until later this summer. Mendelsohn said delaying the decision would ensure the council fully understands the potential implications for the site.
