HOUSTON — Apple Inc. plans to shift part of its Mac Mini production to a facility in Houston, Texas, as part of a broader effort to expand its U.S.-based manufacturing operations.
Sabih Khan, the company’s chief operating officer, said production will begin later this year at a Foxconn facility in north Houston. While some assembly will move to the United States, Mac Mini production will continue in Asia, with the new line expected to serve domestic demand.
Apple previously assembled the Mac Pro in Texas, though that program later scaled back. Khan said the company is more confident in the long-term demand for the Mac Mini, which is positioned at a lower price point than the Mac Pro.
The tech giant is also expanding its Houston site to include an advanced manufacturing training center scheduled to open later this year. The facility will train students and supplier employees in Apple’s production processes.
The move follows Apple’s earlier commitment to invest $600 billion in the United States over four years. It also comes amid shifting U.S. trade policies and tariff rules that have affected global supply chains.
